Laparoscopic Surgery - Have a normal life soon after surgery

Laparoscopic surgery also referred as Keyhole surgery is a way of performing a surgery with the support of video camera and many thin instruments. Instead of making a large incision (or cut) for certain operations, surgeons make tiny incisions and insert thin instruments and a camera into an area, such as into the abdomen, to view the internal organs and repair or remove tissue.

The Laparoscopy procedure

In a laparoscopy, the surgeon will insert tiny fiber-optic instruments are inserted into the body through small surgical openings. Then inserts a video camera into the opening, which guides the surgeon to manipulate the instruments through other openings. Sometimes, the surgeon will make only one incision and all the instruments will be inserted through that incision which is known as single incision laparoscopic surgery or SILS. The following are the steps of an abdominal laparoscopy:
  • After the patient gets asleep by giving anesthesia, the surgeon will make a small incision near the navel and inserts a hollow, thin tube called a trocar through the incision. This tube extends from inside the abdomen to the outside.
  • Then the surgeon injects Carbon dioxide gas into the abdomen to expand it and to get room to view the organs.
  • The surgeon then inserts a laparoscope with a high-intensity light and very tiny camera,  into the abdomen through the trocar. The surgeon then views a large image from the camera on a monitor in the operating room.
  • Then the surgeon will insert other instruments through the other small incisions and manipulate these instruments to perform the procedure
  • Once the procedure is performed, the surgeon removes the instruments.
  • Finally the incisions are stitched closed, and bandages are placed over them.

Advantages of Laparoscopy Surgery

  • As this procedure is carried out by making small incisions, there will be a very less post operative pain as compared to open surgery.
  • After a Laparoscopic surgery, patients are not required to spend longer duration in the hospital.
  • Lower risk of surgical site infection.
  • Lower risk of an incisional hernia.
  • The patients can return back to their routine activities at a faster rate

Hernia is a common disorder occurring in both men and women. They are characterised by a hole or weakness in the abdominal wall through which the contents in the abdomen protrude outside, causing a bulge. They usually develop near the umbilicus, groin area or at the site of a prior abdominal surgery.

The institute of gastroenterology at Billroth Hospital offers laparoscopic hernia repair in Chennai which is a widely popular surgical treatment procedure for management of hernia. The procedure helps in limiting the trauma usually associated with surgeries.

Causes of Hernia

Hernia in the umbilicus region is mainly caused due to weak spot in the area that are present at the time of birth or due to an increased abdominal pressure that develops sue to a pregnancy or muscular strain.
In men, hernia can develop near the blood vessels in the groin area. An increased muscle deterioration or strain can result in its development as well. Sites of prior surgeries can also provide weak spots which increase the risk of hernia development.

The Need for Hernia Repair

Hernia can obstruct the bowel movement, if the hernia sac obstructs the intestines. This can be fatal as there is an increased chance of peritonitis. Hernia is known to cause pain and discomfort while walking or standing for extended periods. Progressive enlargement of hernia can prove as a threat to health, necessitating its repair.

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic hernia repair is an ideal management option as it eliminates the usual trauma and pain associated with conventional surgical procedures. The procedure, also called key hole surgery involves making small incisions in the abdominal area through which the laparoscope is inserted.
The abdomen is filled with carbon dioxide, to inflate it which provides the surgeon with enough space to work inside. The hernia is viewed on a monitor attached to the equipment by the images transmitted through the laparoscope. The procedure is minimally invasive and is performed under general anaesthesia.
